Getting to Caltech

Airport and Shuttle Information
To get to the Caltech campus from the airport, we recommend you use Super Shuttle. Ask the driver to take you to 150 S. Chester Avenue in Pasadena, two blocks north of Caltech. Please get a receipt so we can reimburse you for the fare and the tip for the driver. More information about Super Shuttle can be found at www.supershuttle.com.

Getting Settled In

MURF students may move into 150 S. Chester in the afternoon on Sunday, June 15. One of the MURF program associates will be at the apartment complex to greet you and to give you your housing packet.

MURF Welcoming Dinner
The MURF Welcoming Dinner will be held on Sunday evening at 6:00 pm in the Avery Courtyard (building 99 on the campus map). MURF students, mentors, co-mentors, the program associates (PAs), SFP staff members, former MURF students, and other interested individuals will be in attendance. Dress is casual.


Orientation Activities

MURF students will have breakfast with the PAs on Monday morning, June 16. Details will be given at the MURF Welcoming Dinner.

The first MURF Monday session will be held Monday, June 11, at 11:30 am. Lunch will be provided. We will meet in 121 Beckman Institute, #74 on the campus map.

Note: MURF students are strongly encouraged to get their Caltech ID card before the MURF Monday meeting. Go to the campus bookstore (building 51), go to the Campus Card Services area inside the bookstore, and ask for your ID card.

Orientation for all students in all SFP programs will be held the afternoon of Tuesday, June 17. Here is a schedule of activities:

2:00 - 2:30 pm - Check-in and Registration (outdoors, on the south side
of Baxter, building 77)

2:30 - 4:00 pm - SFP Orientation (Baxter Lecture Hall, enter on south side of Baxter)

4:00 - 4:30 pm - Meeting with your SURF Student Advisory Council (SURFSAC) group (various locations)

4:30 - 6:00 pm – I-9 Completion in the Student-Faculty Programs Office (08 Parsons-Gates, #31 on the campus map)

Campus tours (optional)

6:00 pm - Barbecue for students and mentors (Glanville Courtyard, Beckman Institute)



Other First-week Activities

Students working at Caltech:
Students doing their research at Caltech will begin their projects on Wednesday morning, June 18, unless they have made other arrangements with their mentors.

Mandatory Safety Meeting: Wednesday, June 18, 1:30 PM in Baxter Lecture Hall (#77)

Students working at JPL:
7:15 AM, Wednesday, June 18: Meet at the corner of San Pasqual Street and Holliston Avenue. Buses will take JPL students to the Lab for orientation activities, safety training, and lunch. (Note: You must have photo ID to enter the bus.)

You will meet your mentor and begin your project on Wednesday afternoon. You will be issued a temporary badge upon arrival. In order to receive your permanent badge, you are required to provide proof of citizenship.

All Non-Caltech Students:
Special Orientation Session: Thursday, June 14, 6:00 – 9:00 PM. Dinner will be provided. This meeting will introduce you to Caltech and Pasadena and will provide important information to help make your stay on the campus comfortable and enjoyable.

 


Money Matters

Students whose fellowship is being paid through the Caltech payroll system. First payday will be Tuesday, July 1. Please keep this in mind when deciding how much money to bring with you.

Health Insurance Reminder

If you have not yet secured health insurance that covers you for the duration of your stay at Caltech, please remember to do so and to provide us with the Health Insurance Verification form. **You will not be allowed to begin your project until this insurance is in place.**
